The Super Zero® Selvedge - Limited Series

For our Limited Series launch of the Super Zero® Indigo Selvedge, we asked our Senior Product Developer, Cally, to tell us what she loves about this release. 

We love raw selvedge denim, and right now, good selvedge is hard to come by. So when we got the chance to get our hands on this fabric, I knew we’d been lucky.

Our 13oz Super Zero Indigo Selvedge is woven by Kowa; a mill we’ve worked with before and have always been impressed by. When this fabric came along, it caught our attention straight away. It has a softness that makes it feel special without being precious, and that felt worth getting excited about.

The softness comes from the yarn. Super Zero® uses a technology originally developed for towels: a water-soluble fibre is spun into the yarn, and when it dissolves it leaves tiny air pockets behind. Woven on Kowa’s traditional shuttle looms, that makes a raw selvedge that is more supple, malleable and breathable than most. It’s an old way of weaving with a new idea inside it.

What I love most is how easy these jeans are to wear. Raw selvedge can take some breaking in, but this fabric has so much drape that you can get on with your day and let the jeans settle in naturally as you wear them.

That’s what makes me so excited to see how they fade. It’s a special jean, but it’s also an easy everyday one, and the best fades come from jeans that get worn constantly. Every pair will turn out differently, depending on who’s wearing them and what they get up to, and because these are so comfortable, I think people will reach for them every day and really wear them in. I can’t wait to see how our customers wear them, and what their jeans look like a year from now.

Adding a new selvedge to the collection meant it had to be right. It’s quite a lot different from our OG, which has a slight red undertone. This one is closer in tone to our organic denim. I reach for my organics every day, and I think it’s because the colour works so well with my wardrobe. I wear quite an eclectic mix of things, and the jeans just go with everything. I don’t have to think too much about what I’m wearing on top; they just work. I think this new indigo has that same quality. It’s a rich, deep blue with a subtle sheen, and I can see it becoming one of those pairs you keep reaching for, whatever else you’re wearing.

It’s our first raw fabric in a while, and releasing it for winter feels right. It’s really special, and really true to us.
