Our first Double Black short run of the year.
Worth The Wait.
We know we have kept you on your toes for a few months.
Last time we launched a double black was a whole year ago.
Why Double Black?
Most black denim is single black. That means that either the warp is white, or the weft is white.
Double black is different. It is like a rare pearl.
Both the warp and the weft are black. That gives the denim a rich, deep black colour.
The warp (vertical) has been rope dyed with sulfur - a superior dyeing technology.
The weft (horizontal) is reactive yarn dyed.
Double black is a more costly technique because it requires twice as much dye and takes much longer to make.
But, oh boy, does it look good. The magic with the double black is they do two things well. They do ‘work’ incredibly well. But they do ‘going out’ just as well too.
They look understated and beautiful. They are a true classic straight out of the bag.
Why an orange line selvedge?
Well the story goes that it’s a nod to Harley Davidson.
Not a lot of people know that there was a Harley Davidson factory in Japan that made motorbikes just for the Japanese market.
The first Japanese Harley-Davidsons were built in 1935 and, post-war they become synonymous with the image of denim-wearing ‘taiyozoku’ characters who embodied all that Japan’s post-war disillusioned youth desired, and that Japan’s new conservative government feared.
The Back Story.
Kurabo mill was the first ever mill to make denim in Japan.
(Everyone wants to be the OG. But, in truth, there is only ever one.)
They have been making denim since 1888.
Just for context - it was a good year for start-ups.
- The pneumatic tire.
- The ball point pen.
- The gramophone.
- The light bulb.
(So glad they didn’t give up.)
It wasn’t until 1972 that Kurabo finally succeeded in making the first ever Japanese selvedge denim.
They had failed seven times previously.
They kept getting back up.
And on their eighth attempt they got something even the perfectionists at Kurabo could see was a selvedge that would set a new standard of excellence.
"Fall seven times, stand up eight." — Japanese Proverb.

The Details Matter.
We will be shipping them from mid November.
As they are cut to order, we will take payment when ordered.
Previous short runs have sold out within 4 hours, so if you are tempted, our advice is not to delay. We will only make 99 of them.
