A different kind of Selvedge
Our autumn short-run selvedge opens for early access on 20 October.
Woven at Kowa Mill in Japan, it brings together traditional weaving methods and innovative yarn technology. This raw denim has a softer handle, depth of colour and a subtle sheen.

THE YARN
Super Zero® uses a specialist twisting process developed by Japanese yarn maker Asano Nenshi.
Textile yarn is combined with a water-soluble thread, then treated using controlled twisting and vacuum steam. The temporary thread supports this construction through weaving before being dissolved during washing.
Its removal leaves spaces within the yarn, allowing the fibres to expand. The difference begins inside the yarn itself, changing its internal structure before it becomes part of the finished denim.

THE MILL
Kowa’s textile history began in 1894 as a cotton fabric wholesaler in Japan.
Today, its denim development combines traditional Japanese textile techniques with research into fibres and yarn construction. Its work spans natural materials including specialist cottons and silk, exploring how the choice of fibre changes the character of the finished cloth.
For Super Zero Indigo, that approach brings innovative yarn technology into a traditional redline selvedge.

THE DENIM
This 13oz raw selvedge feels less stiff from the outset than most traditional raw selvedge.
Its softer, more supple handle means less of the initial rigidity often associated with raw denim. The yarn construction gives the cloth more natural give, allowing it to move with the body without elastane while retaining its structure.
Deep indigo and a subtle surface sheen add richness to the cloth, which will develop its own creases and fades with use.
Each pair is cut, sewn and finished in our factory in Aberteifi, Wales, then signed by its maker.

THE STORY
Last year, our Head of Product came across Super Zero® Double Black selvedge from Kowa. It was our first time working with the Japanese textile company, whose heritage stretches back to 1894. A company known for combining traditional weaving techniques with innovative thinking.
What stayed with us was the response from people who bought a pair and lived in them. They told us how easily the denim moved from the beginning: raw denim with softness, durability and a supple feel that still held its structure.
One request kept coming back. Could we make it in indigo?
A year later, here it is.
